Discovery Tools for Buried Copper Deposits in the Atacama Desert
Landscape near Gaby Sur porphyry Cu deposit with Pular and Socompa volcanoes in the background (both >6000 m)
Cu prospective Cordillera Domeyko, Northern Chile
Widespread gravel strata in northern Chile and southern Peru cover copper mineralization. These "Atacama gravels" have a diverse stratigraphy and composition reflecting their protracted deposition under different geological conditions. This project will outline an exploration methodology which integrates the evolution of the landscape as well as mapping of gravels and soils with innovative geochemical techniques to detect buried copper mineralization.
The project is led by MDRU but is carried out under COPEDIM,an international collaboration between researchers at Chilean and French universities with UBC (http://www2.obs-mip.fr/lmicopedim).
